Earthenware manufacturer at Shelton, Stoke-on-Trent , England

  • The business was previously operated by the brothers John (d.1828) and William (d.1825) Yates and then continued by members of the Yates family until c.1835 

  • Dr. Samuel Scriven (appointed by The Government Commission into Child Labour in the Pottery Industry) visited the works of Yates and May in 1840 and placed them in 'Class 2' - 'with very few exceptions; are either low, damp, close, small, dark, hot, dirty, ill ventilated, or unwholesome, or have all these disadvantages.' 

  • Scriven reported that the works were 'Partially suspended' and that only 4 under thirteens worked there.

  • October 1843 the works were advertised to let, apply John & William Yates; moulds and copperplate engravings for sale. [Pottery references in the Staffordshire Advertiser 1795-1865; Rodney Hampson]
