MARE

"The impressed mark "MARE" is generally accepted to have been used by this potter. The main blue-printed pattern found with this mark is a good quality copy of the Spode Italian design"   Coysh & Henrywood - 'The Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery 1780-1880'.

NOTE:

Although Henrywood, in the Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery, attributes these marks to John Mare. In his book 'Staffordshire Potters 1781-1900' he attributes them to Matthew Mare (& Co) - also of Shelton.

Godden states "It is not clear which potter of this name the simple MARE mark refers. John Mares are recorded at Hanley from c. 1790 to 1827,but several other potters named Mare are also recorded at the same period in the rate books" Geoffrey Godden, Encyclopaedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks.
