The Pug Mill

The pug mill is a long barrel-shaped machine containing graduated cutters, from a large hatchet-shaped tool to the small sharp knives at the delivery end. As these cutters revolve, the clay is churned and propelled through the barrel, which greatly increases its homogeneity.

Above is an illustration of a "double-grind pug mill" used for producing goods where a very smooth surface is required, such as in Flooring Quarries, and the value of this extra grinding process can easily be ascertained by comparing the finish of goods produced with and without it. In making Buff Quarries, or goods of a similar colour, care has to be exercised to prevent contamination by other clays, especially red-burning clays. For this reason one mill is kept exclusively for the preperation of Buff Clays, which ensures purity of colour after firing.

Attention to these details assures users satisfaction, which builds goodwill and repeat orders for everyone instrumental in recommending and supplying good products.
