Staffordshire Clay Seams

Staffordshire clay seams are world renowned for the high quality of their deposits containing peroxide of iron, which is very largely responsible for the hardness and durability of the goods produced from these clays.

At the Springfield Tileries one finds Staffordshire clay at its best, with as many as 20 different seams, free from lime, thus enabling a wide range of mixtures to be obtained without resorting to the use of artificial colouring matter.

In working these seams and preparing the clays for weathering, great care is taken to keep them seperated - and the reason for this is explained in dealing with the mixing process on page 5.

It is from these Staffordshire clays, when thoroughly weathered, that hand-made Tiles, Ridges, Roof Fittings, Flooring Quarries and all other "Triton" products are made.
