Memories of St. James, Longton

Parishioners of the church

Raymond Coldaugh
Raymond Colclough

Mr Colclough was a Sunday School teacher.

one Sunday when they were redeveloping the site almost opposite to St. James into the Garage and filling station. The workmen had found a coffin in the basement of the old premises, A. E. Birch undertakers, and stood it up against one of the nearby cast iron columns supporting the canopy in front of Blundreds. On it they had put a notice to the effect of Any Offers??  It is said that Mr. Colclough said he wasn't interested unless it had a body in it. I think he was a biology teacher in his day job....
