However this period in the company's history was brought to an end in June 1978, when Number 4 Blast Furnace produced its last cast, after a 137 year tradition of ironmaking at Shelton, and the 14 year-old Kaldos and their down stream casting machines produced their last steel.

Shelton's rolling mill being built in 1966 was the most modern mill within the company at the time. Due to its design, efficiency and working practices, like its predecessors, the mill had a reputation world-wide for quality.

The steel plant site was cleared in 1986. Once again it was to capture the nation's attention when it became the scene for the country's second National Garden Festival.
