more on Shelton New Road

The main route from Hanley to Stoke runs down Broad Street into Snow Hill and Howard Place and then into Stoke Road. At the junction of Snow Hill and Howard Place Shelton New Road runs to Hartshill and then to Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Off Shelton New Road is Cemetery Road and Hanley Cemetery. This road is the only one which crosses over both the Caldon and Trent & Mersey Canals, it also crosses the A500 Queensway and the main railway line from London to Manchester. The Fowlea Brook also runs under the road.

Also at the bottom of the bank in Cliff Vale (by the Trent & Mersey Canal) we find the facade of the old Twyford model pottery (built 1887 & now a listed building) and on the opposite side of the road the 1945 buildings now taken over by Caradon.

On the 1898 OS map the road had two names, from Cliff Vale towards Newcastle it was Shelton New Road but in the other direction from Cliff Vale towards Hanley it was Newcastle Road - it was renamed in the early 1950's.
