Ringland Close (formerly Ringland Street & formerly East View),
Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent

East View together with West Street and St. Ann Street ran between Bucknall Old Road and Bucknall New Road - in the early 1950's East View was renamed to Ringland Street and West Street was renamed Ashmore Street.

Because of the fact that the six towns of Stoke-on-Trent had grown up independently there had been duplication of many street names which led to confusion as people started to move more freely around the city.

For example there were 7 'Albert Streets', 11 'Church Streets' and 12 'High Streets'.

In the early 1950's a large number of streets were renamed. In March 1955 the City of Stoke-on-Trent published a booklet entitled "Complete list of streets renamed and list of new streets laid out since January 1950"

originally this was East View - it was renamed to Ringland Street in the early 1950's
although the Ringland Street & Ashmore Street areas were later demolished
in the late 1960's to make way for a development of flats, many of the other streets
have survived

Late 1960's - the construction of the tower flats which
stand either side of the top of Bucknall New Road
Ringland Street & Ashmore Street were demolished to make
way for this development

Peter Whalley says....  "I enclose a photo of the Cobden Arms (taken I believe during the war) which was located in East View Hanley.
I recently acquired the photo from a distant cousin who lived there with her parents George and Ellen Wilkinson who ran the pub from 1927 to its closure. Prior to that Ellen's uncle Edward Bowers ran the pub.
East View became Ringland Street in the fifties and the electoral roll shows the Wilkinsons in residence up to 1957. In 1962 only 5 residences are listed in the roll. I have been told that during demolition, a bulldozer fell into the cellar."
