the date stone incorporates a Stafford knot - one of the few examples which is correctly executed - going from the top left, the first strand of rope should cross OVER the other rope and not UNDER as shown on the majority of Stafford knots.

 Built in 1905 as brewery offices, it was later used as Longton Police Station before being demolished in 1992. A new purpose built police station was built on the same site.

An oil painting by C.W. Sheldon, formerly in the collections of the Staffordshire Police Museum, now part of the Staffordshire County Museum collection.
