from the 1977 - City of Stoke-on-Trent Handbook
WOOD & SONS LIMITED "Early in the 18th century there were three brothers, Ralph, Aaron and Moses Wood. Ralph achieved renown with his famous and now rare Staffordshire figures, and especially his delightful Toby jugs, genuine examples of which are now "museum pieces". Aaron, born in 1817, was the finest mould maker in the Staffordshire potteries, and father of the even more celebrated Enoch Wood, a man of great enterprise with a flair for inventions whose masterly craftsmanship served to build up the considerable business of Wood & Caldwell, later Enoch Wood & Son. The firm achieved a great reputation, especially in America, for which market Enoch designed his artistic blue and white plates with rich and finely disposed borders encircling views of England, of which there are known seventy-one centres. During the last fifty years the firm of Wood & Sons Ltd. has revived for the modern market the "English Scenery", "Woodland" and other designs of Enoch Wood. To Moses, the third of the three brothers, can be traced the beginning of an unbroken succession of eight generations of master potters covering more than two centuries. At their Trent and
Stanley potteries Wood & Sons Ltd. are manufacturers of fine
earthenware tableware and oven-to-table ware for both export and home
markets, and are also large producers of hotelware for restaurants,
hospitals and canteens. At their Ellgreave division Wood & Sons
Ltd. manufacture teapots, teapot sets and fancies, and at their H. J.
Wood division a wide range of ornamental pottery." |
