Stoke-on-Trent but Shell on the Road

"Stoke-on-Trent but Shell on the road" - advert issued by Shell in 1936
 - illustrated by Edward Bawden -

In the 1930's advertising for Shell was very highly regarded in terms of its quality - many excellent adverts, using contemporary artists, were issued - including some well-known series and utilising famous strap-lines such as "You can be sure of Shell".

Some adverts in the series used punning play on place names, such as "Stow on the Wold but Shell on the Road"    "Bexhill-on-Sea but Shell on the Road" - evidently Stoke-on-Trent was well known enough to be included in the series - the Bottle Kilns and Canal Barges of the pottery industry were used for the illustration.
