Hanley Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Shelton

Condition of the chapels

Although the Hanley cemetery chapels are architecturally the most impressive of the Stoke-on-Trent chapels - they are being allowed to go to rack and ruin.

The Fenton cemetery chapel was demolished in 2001 and the Burslem chapel set to be demolished in October 2008. The Longton and Hanley chapels are listed buildings and so protected from summarily demolition, however the condition of Longton chapel is poor and Hanley is going the same way.

The following photos were taken in March 2007 and posted on the '28 days later' web site:

"It seems that the council use this as a storeroom for the cemetery gardener & a fine mess they seem to be making of the place."

"Details of the inner roof -  note how the false ceiling matches the neo-gothic architecture!"

Minton wall and floor tiles - the floor tiles are becoming badly damaged

Graffiti on the faces by the chapel doors
it could cause serious damage when trying to remove the marker pen
