"When the gigantic Hem Heath
Colliery A frame was demolished on August 19, 1997, it was as if King Coal in
the Potteries had had his legs finally blown from under him."
The Hem Heath pit ceased production in 1996, and when Silverdale Colliery closed two years later in December 1998, it meant the end of deep-mining in North Staffordshire. |
