Stoke-on-Trent - photo of the week |
"Howve
yer bin duck?"
picture : Vicky Mount.
This week, not a photo but a stunning painting by renowned artist Vicky Mount - the painting reflects the period in the Stoke-on-Trent Potteries before the Clean Air Act in the early 1950's which led to the demise of the coal fired bottle kiln - these smoky kilns which dominated the landscape were replaced by gas and electric kilns. The picture captures the plethora of kilns with the closely knit terrace houses, cheek by jowl with the pottery works. The picture shows typical terrace houses of the day (many still standing) - two up two down with the front door open directly into the front room - no porch or passage. Vicky Mount and other artists can be found exhibiting at theartbay gallery in Christchurch Street, Fenton. |
