Basford Streets Past & Present

Basford is a district of Stoke-on-Trent situated to the south-west of the city, close to the boundary with Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Historically, it developed from a small rural settlement into a more established residential area during the 19th and 20th centuries, influenced by coal mining and other local industries in the wider Potteries region.

Its growth was supported by expanding transport links and the gradual spread of urban development from both Stoke and Newcastle. Basford also experienced significant mid-20th-century street renaming, with eight of its fourteen recorded streets being renamed during that period as part of wider administrative changes.

Today, Basford is primarily a residential district, reflecting its long transition from rural origins to suburban character within the western side of Stoke-on-Trent.
