Birches Head is a residential district in the northern part of Stoke-on-Trent, situated between Hanley and Milton on the rising ground above the city centre.
The area developed from a mixture of rural land and early industrial activity into a more established urban neighbourhood during the 19th and early 20th centuries, as the Potteries expanded northwards. Its growth was closely linked to nearby coal mining and associated local industry, with housing gradually filling in the slopes and connecting it more closely to the surrounding districts.
Today, Birches Head is primarily residential in character, forming part of the continuous urban area extending out from Hanley towards the northern edge of the city.
