Workshops and outhouses of the end terraced
house
"I lived in the corner house
mentioned above. It was my family's home for many years. My
mother lived there from birth, 1921, until the property was
bought under compulsory purchase because of the land clearance
scheme in 2001.
As I understand it, it was built by
Cornes Builders, and was the first one to be built as a stand
alone property. The rest of the terraced houses being
subsequently added at a later date.
My grandfather was a coal
merchant and the out houses shown were used as stables for his
horses. The feeding troughs were still there when the house was
demolished. The first floor being used to store hay as well as
other things. My grandfather died in 1959 at the age of 75.
I was born in 1952 and I remember helping to deliver coal to the
houses around using wooden coal trucks which were like large
wooden boxes on two iron wheels, with two wooden handles. They
would hold up to 2 cwt of coal, approx. My cousins did the
pushing and I rode inside. I was only a toddler at the time. I
remember chickens being kept in the 'big yard' as we called the
area surrounded by the rear of the house."
