Henry Pidduck and Sons, Goldsmiths Pidduck's established in 1841, survived until the 1990's. The shop was in a block at the bottom of Market Square, bounded by Lamb Street, Fountain Square, Miles Bank and Stafford Street. Henry Pidduck was born in 1813 and was elected Hanley Mayor in 1864. In 1861 he was living at 1 Grove Place, Shelton.
Mr. C. Ellam, Practical Optician (Wholesale & Retail) operated from 17, Market Square and had a Branch Establishment at 19 Hope Street, Hanley. From: " A descriptive account of The Potteries (illustrated), 1893 advertising and trade journal. Page 38" Messrs.

busy streets in the Potteries town of Hanley hears the
newsvendor's cry - "Final, City Final" - trade is brisk with
dramatic headlines repeated in every conversation. Titanic sunk two
miles deep! This picture (by Anthony Forster) is painted with Pidduck's Jewelers behind. On the left is Swinertons Cafe and the indoor market. At the top of the picture are two public houses in Town Road. (was High Street but renamed in the early 1950's) on the "Angel Restaurant and Wine Stores"
