Lightwood Streets Past & Present

Lightwood, in the south of Stoke-on-Trent near Longton and Rough Close, developed from a rural area of farmland and scattered dwellings into a residential suburb during the 19th and 20th centuries. Its growth was influenced by the expansion of nearby pottery towns, improved transport links, and the steady spread of housing into surrounding countryside.

This page lists the present and historic streets of Lightwood and links to descriptions of the origins of street names, old maps, local developments, and the changing character of the district over time. From former agricultural land and rural lanes to later suburban estates, the streets of Lightwood reflect the gradual transformation of the southern Potteries landscape.

Today, Lightwood is mainly residential in character, with many streets still reflecting its rural origins and its development as part of the wider expansion of Stoke-on-Trent.
