Smallthorne Streets Past & Present

Smallthorne, in the northern part of Stoke-on-Trent between Burslem and Norton, developed from a small rural settlement into a substantial residential community during the 19th and 20th centuries. The area expanded alongside the growth of the Potteries, with housing spreading along the main roads connecting neighbouring districts and former open land gradually being developed.

This page lists the present and historic streets of Smallthorne and links to descriptions of the origins of street names, old maps, local developments, and the changing character of the district over time. From old village lanes and field boundaries to later terraces and suburban housing estates, the streets of Smallthorne reflect the gradual northward expansion of Stoke-on-Trent.

Today, Smallthorne is mainly residential in character, with many streets still preserving traces of the district’s earlier village origins and its development within the wider Potteries.
