Stoke Streets Past & Present

The town of Stoke, in the central part of Stoke-on-Trent, developed as one of the historic core settlements of the Potteries and became a key centre of industry, transport, and civic activity during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Closely associated with the growth of pottery manufacturing, the area expanded rapidly along the River Trent and the canal and railway networks that linked the towns together, creating a dense mix of industry and housing.

This page lists the present and historic streets of Stoke and links to descriptions of the origins of street names, old maps, local developments, and the changing character of the district over time. From early industrial streets and workers’ housing to civic buildings, transport routes, and later redevelopment, the streets of Stoke reflect the central role the area played in the formation of Stoke-on-Trent.

Today, Stoke remains an important part of the city’s core, where historic streets sit alongside modern developments, transport infrastructure, and civic institutions that continue to shape the identity of the Potteries.
