High Street 99
High Street 99

This shows the place where John Rilley grew up (no.99) now "B.and .A. Carpets". He lived above the shop, second floor living rooms and top floor bedrooms, the premises was later condemned due to subsidence but it has obviously since been repaired.
Tony Bailey's shop was Moretons butcher shop and the entry adjacent served him and number 99.
Pembertons clothing shop, now Mei Sin, and The Dolphin Inn. the next premises down.

That day there had been a traffic incident further down hence the barricades.

Geoffrey Smith adds......

"During the 1950s and 1960s, I stayed with my aunt and uncle during school summer holidays at 231 High Street.  My uncle worked for Mr Moreton and on his retirement, took over the butchery business until his own retirement in the late 1970s.  Hence I don't understand where no.99 comes in!

Going north from my uncle's shop was a sweet shop, (run by a lady whose name escapes me). Next to that was Cyril Ebrill's jewellers and next or near to that property was Roger Coupe, a cycle shop.  I can't remember  the trades of the two shops below, although George Woodvine occupied one property nearby as a clog maker and shoe repairer.  I am sure the property described as the Dolphin pub (Ind Coope and Allsopp) was actually Colin Barlow, a newsagent etc.  I believe the Dolphin was further down, as I remember a dray being unloaded in front of the pub. The last property before the supermarket on the corner of Roundwell Street was Parr's ironmongers.  A similar name, Farr's rings a distant bell in my memory and that company might have occupied one of the other properties nearby."
