Shops in Paradise Street:

Absalom Wood
(b.1851 d.1922), a member of the Burslem potters Wood family was a Tunstall architect and surveyor.

He was awarded a scholarship to South Kensington Art School which he didn't take up - Arnold Bennett used this in the character of Cyril Povey (The Old Wives' Tale). Absalom Wood was articled to Scrivener architects of Hanley and later had his own practice in Tunstall.

Amongst his many public buildings were: Tunstall Town Hall; Tunstall Library, Science & Art School; The Clock Tower, Tunstall; The School of Art, Burslem.

The only local example of Absalom Wood's art nouveau style was a shop front in Paradise Street.
