Earthenware manufacturer at the Top Bridge Pottery, Longport, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent.
  • The pottery manufacturing companies of Price Bros. (Burslem) Ltd and Kensington Pottery Ltd were both subsidiaries of Arthur Wood & Son (Longport) Ltd.

  • In January 1962 they were amalgamated to make one company: Price & Kensington Potteries Ltd. which operated from the Longport works that Price Brothers already occupied.

  • From 1962 to 2003 Price & Kensington were prolific manufacturers of everyday earthenware, tea and coffee sets, novelties and souvenirs. Up to 2003 all the ware was made in England.

  • In October 2003 the Arthur Wood Group, which included Price and Kensington, went into administration due to financial difficulty. Shortly afterwards the brand names of Arthur Wood, Price & Kensington and Pristine were sold to Rayware, a house ware importer. It was also announced that manufacturer of this ware would be moved abroad.

  • The name Price & Kensington still continues as part of the Rayware Group - manufacturing is abroad, typically China.

Previously: Price Bros. (Burslem) Ltd and Kensington Pottery Ltd

Subsequently: a trade name of the Rayware Group

Acquisition  of brand names by Rayware:

Following the acquisition in October 2003 of the Arthur Wood Group (which included Price and Kensington) by the Rayware Group, manufacturing was moved abroad - typically to the Far East.

Although the ware is now not made in England Rayware maintains an association to its roots as an English, Stoke-on-Trent based manufacturer through its branding and marketing.

Using the British Union Jack flag on packaging and phrases such as:

  • "British brands",

  • "from our headquarters in England we design and develop..."

  • "designed in England", "designed in Great Britain"

Price Kensington Potteries

this mark says 'ENGLAND' and not 'MADE IN ENGLAND' it is likely dated 2004+  after manufacturing had been moved to the Far East

Ware carrying the backstamp Price & Kensington in a black square is 2004+ and produced abroad.

Heavily branded with the British flag this teapot is 'British Design' but not 'British manufacture'

  • In terms of quality, the country of manufacture alone does not determine whether a piece of pottery is good or bad.

  • Many items produced overseas for British pottery companies are made to excellent standards, using modern production methods and following designs, specifications, and quality controls set by the parent company.

The possibility for confusion is obvious - although the official advertising never makes the claim that the ware is actually made in Great Britain. Some resellers in on-line market places say the the country of origin is China, other mistakenly say United Kingdom and describe the ware as "Made in the United Kingdom by the trusted brand Price & Kensington, this teapot..."

» Made in England - does it matter?
