The
business was previously operated by the brothers John (d.1828) and William
(d.1825) Yates and then continued by members of the Yates family until c.1835

Dr.
Samuel Scriven (appointed by The Government Commission into Child
Labour in the Pottery Industry) visited the works of Yates and May in
1840 and placed them in 'Class 2' - 'with very few exceptions; are either
low, damp, close, small, dark, hot, dirty, ill ventilated, or unwholesome,
or have all these disadvantages.'

Scriven
reported that the works were 'Partially suspended' and that only 4 under
thirteens worked there.

1843 the works were advertised to let, apply John & William Yates;
