Location and period of operation:

Hawley & Co

Fenton

1862

1893

Earthenware, majolica and china manufacturer at King Street, Foley, Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent, England.
  • The 1870 Harrod directory notes that Hawley & Co manufactured china and earthenware for home and foreign markets.

  • Hawley & Co were known to have copied other manufacturers majolica designs. In addition to copying S. Fielding & Co's designs they also copied Wedgwood's Ocean design. Fielding sued them for copyright infringement for copies of both Daisy and Fan. Hawley lost the case and had to pay a fine. They later registered their own versions of these designs.
NOTE that one authority (The History of S. Fielding & Co., Susan Hill) states that "During 1882, the firm [Fielding] brought an unsuccessful action against Hawley & Co for infringing their FAN design. Although morally the victors, there were unable to secure a verdict due to a technical oversight."
