Earthenware manufacturers at The Foley Potteries, Foley, Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent
The partners were John King Knight, his son John King Wood Knight (the '& Co') and his brother-in-law George Elkin (previous partners had retired in 1833 and 1840).
They were recorded as "Manufacturers of Earthenware, Flint and Colour Grinders, Crate Makers, and Farmers, at the Foley Potteries in the parish of Stoke-upon-Trent"
In December 1840 Dr. Samuel Scriven visited 173 potteries to report on behalf of the Parliamentary Commissioners into child labour in the pottery industry. He recorded the works of Knight and Elgin as 'Class 1' - "they contain large, well ventilated, light, airy, commodious rooms, in all respects adapted to the nature of the processes carried on in them."
The business was recorded as Knight Elkin & Knight (1841-44) - Godden notes: 'This firm seems to represent on of the changes in style of Knight Elkin & Co'.
John King Wood Knight retired from the partnership in October 1843 and the business continued with John King Knight and George Elkin.
George Elkin retired in 1847.
