Charabanc Outing
The charabanc outing will almost certainly have been
connected with Normacot School or Normacot Church.
In the 2nd row back, 2nd from the right, is Harriet Moss née Hallam, born
1880 (see the 1881 census on previous page) in Normacot (103, now Dawson's Funeral Parlour). Her husband Fred Moss is
towards the top of the photo, with the dark moustache. His father was a school attendance officer.
Harriet was a schoolteacher, originally at Normacot School.
Her elder sister Lizzie, born 1866 in York St, Longton, was headmistress at
Florence
Girls School, one of the very few fully qualified female teachers of her day.
She had to go to Fishponds College, near Bristol, to study, 1 of only 2 colleges in the
country to train female teachers.
Harriet herself became a headmistress, very unusual for a married woman in those
days.
Altogether, 4 Hallam sisters (including Nellie, another Normacot schoolteacher), were
very influential in Normacot Church. They sewed many of the embroideries which were
destroyed in the fire in 1997. |
In the 2nd row, far right
is William Warrilow Hallam (born 1891).
2nd row centre, in white
shirt, is Reginald Mitchell (the designer of the Spitfire plane)
Reginald Mitchell attended Queensberry
Road Secondary School, and was in an elevated stream - he was 4 years younger than my William Warrilow Hallam.
The photo was taken c 1903.
William Warrilow Hallam was
born 1891.
Reginald Mitchell born 1895.
