CO-OPERATION
WHAT IT MEANS TO THE MEMBERS

"Why should I become a member of the Burslem and District Co-operative Society?"

It Is a queslton which you are entitled to ask, and one to which you are entitled to a reply. In fact, It Is Important that you should have an adequate reply, because if you join the Society without understanding why you have joined, you may hinder the progress of the Society.

FIRST of all, you must thoroughly understand that a co-operative society Is not like an ordinary business. An ordinary business belongs to one proprietor or a few proprietors. They run the business to make a profit for themse/ves.

On the other hand, the co-operative society is owned by Its customersÑand by no one e/se. That is the reason why every person who joins the society Is asked to provide some part of the " capital." The society must have shops, and warehouses, horses ana carts, motors and garages. These things cost money, but they are necessary to every business. The money to purchase them is provided by the co-operative customers, and it Is called "capital."

THE second thing to remember Is that a co-operative society does not exist to make profit In the ordinary accepted sense of that word. What really happens Is that the members, through the society, supply themselves with the things they need. All the " surplus " made in the trade Is divided amongst the members. In the manner decided upon by the members themselves, and mainly as dividend on purchases. Every penny of the "surplus" Is divided as the customers decide.

THE customer-members of a co-operative society elect their own Committee of Management. The Management Committee has to make a report to the members every three months, and if the committee is not doing its work to the satisfaction of the members, a new committee can be elected by the members.

So, it is plain that co-operators own their own business, control their own business, and supply themselves with the things they need. Cooperative members can nave no interest In supplying goods of poor quality, since they are supplying themselves. That is the reason why co-operative societies are well known for the quality of their goods.

CO-OPERATIVE societies are composed largely of working-class people, many of whom are trade-unionists, anxious to improve conditions of working-class life. Trade union conditions of labour are observed throughout co-operative employment. For that reason co-operative societies should have the support of all trade-unionists.

In other words, co-operative goods are quality goods, made and sold under conditions that are fairÑfair to the person who makes them, fair to the shop assistant who serves them, fair to you as a customer. They are sold at prices that are reasonable and, because the " surplus " Is returned to the customer, every purchase Is a saving.

NYONE can Join the Burslem and District Co-operative Society. The entrance fee is Is. (which includes cost of your Share Book and Book of Rules). You need not pay any more than that at the commencement, providing you let your dividend accumulate until you have at least one £1 share.

Many of our members have allowed their dividend to accumulate over a number of years, and now have substantial sums to their credit. Whatever money you have In your Share Account Is always your own, and may be withdrawn from the Society at your discretion.
