Collection of photos of development in Hanley
about the late 1960's

In the mid/late 1960's efforts were made to modernise part of Hanley. Lewis's built a new department store and the old site was converted to a shopping arcade and offices.
Along Old Hall Street and Bucknall New Road the shops and houses were demolished a new bus station was built along with the West and East Shopping Precinct, incorporating restaurants and a discotheque "The Penny Farthing".
Tower flats were built either side of the top of Bucknall New Road and at the bottom the Limekiln Bridge over the Caldon Canal was rebuilt and widened.
