Postcards of Newcastle - Penkhull Street

Penkhull Street

Penkhull Street (renamed High Street c.1890-1900)

Penkhull Street is an old street in Newcastle it appears on a 1785 map. At the bottom it ran from Brook Street and a junction with London Road and at the top (just past the Guildhall which is clearly visable) it joined High Street. At sometime around 1890-1900 Penkhull Street and High Street was given the one name 'High Street'

The area of Penkhull Street in front of the Guild Hall has, for 100's of years been the market area for the inhabitants of Newcastle.

A market is still held in this area today - Penkhull Street on the 1898 OS map contained a covered market hall, two banks, the Guild Hall, a hotel and at least nine inns and public houses
