Postcards of Newcastle - High Street

High Street

High Street (was Penkhull Street)

looks like it's early morning and the traders are arriving to set up for the market.
Many horse drawn carts and hand barrows are in evidence.

The Guild Hall in Newcastle-under-Lyme was built in 1713AD, replacing an earlier timber-built building, built on piles or stilts with the town market in situ beneath. In 1235 King Henry lll gave the town's traders the right to form a Guild, leading to the building of the original Guildhall
