This pattern is
document in volumes one and two of Petra Williams Romantic
Staffordshire. She identifies this pattern as maker unknown. This plate
is marked on the back "Indian Temples/Carey's".
A reticulated Romantic Staffordshire Oval
Tray or Underliner (most likely for a gravy boat or small tureen) in the
"Ancient Rome" pattern, attributed to Carey & Sons, c.
1840.
Central transfer shows an ancient ruins with 4 women getting water from
the basin of a fountain . Arches and columns dominate the ruins, with
vegetation encroaching on the stonework.
Spectacular reticulated border in a basket weave pattern with faintly
incised markings. Strong blue color on the pierced border, medium blue
on the transfer. 9 ½" x 7".
No markings (hence only the attribution).
This pattern is pictured on p. 14 of the Dictionary of Blue and White
Printed Pottery, Vol. 2, by Coysh and Henrywood, and it is also
