Diamond Pottery Co (Ltd)

Location and period of operation:

Diamond Pottery Co (Ltd)

Hanley

1908

1935

Earthenware manufacturer in Brook StreetHanley, Stoke-on-Trent, England.
  • The business was started in 1908 by James Boulton and Stephen Hawthorn. Announcements were made in the April and May 1908 Pottery Gazette.

  • Both Boulton and Hawthorn were also partners, amongst others, in the Pearl Pottery Co also in Brook Street. It is most likely that both companies operated from the same premises.

  • Geoffrey Godden 'Encyclopedia of British Pottery & Porcelain Marks' states that Diamond Pottery was formerly Pearl Pottery - however this is not correct, both companies continued until 1935/6.

  • In May 1914 an Extraordinary General Meeting was held that determined that the Diamond Pottery Company could not meet its liabilities and was to be wound up. The chairman was W. Brookfield. (The London Gazette 29 May 1914). Although a liquidator was appointed arrangements must have been made to satisfy the creditors as the business continued.

  • The Diamond Pottery Co closed in 1935. In 1936 the 'sister' company Pearl Pottery Co was purchased by the New Hall Pottery Co  "to enlarge its capacity"

NOTE:

The Diamond Pottery Co did not use a diamond shape in any of their marks.

Marks and initials used on ware for identification:

NOTE:

There is often confusion between the marks of the Diamond Pottery Co and the Dresden Porcelain Co and their successors Blyth Porcelain Co.

  • The Dresden Porcelain Co. used the initials D P Co. and they and their successors, Blyth Porcelain Co., used a diamond mark and used the trade name 'Diamond China'.
This causes some confusion with the Diamond Pottery.

  • Dresden Porcelain Co. and Blyth Porcelain Co. produced china ware and were based in the town of Longton.

  • However Diamond Pottery Co. made earthenware and were based in the town of Hanley (they didn't use a diamond shape in any of their marks).
