China manufacturer at the Gladstone Pottery, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, England

  • In 1948 Gladstone Pottery and Thomas Poole businesses were merged and acquired by a new public company - Thomas Poole & Gladstone China Ltd (TPGC Ltd) - which was still controlled by the Poole family. 

  • The Gladstone Pottery continued operating under the name Gladstone China (Longton) Ltd until 1952 when it was renamed Gladstone China (proprietors: Thomas Poole & Gladstone China Ltd).

  • The 1956 Pottery Gazette listed the company officers as: Chairman: Horace Poole. Directors: R. H. Pool, P. E. Poole and V. J. Collingwood. Secretary: J. A. Done.  The 1960 Gazette listed the same people with the exception of the secretary who was F. W. Clarke.

  • The Gladstone Pottery remained in production until March 1960 when the last bottle oven was fired. TPGC Ltd used the site for decorating and distribution until May 1970 when the works were put up for sale.

  • In 1970 the Gailey Group gained control of Thomas Poole & Gladstone China Ltd and merged their British Anchor business into their new acquisition.

  • British Anchor's earthenware and Thomas Poole & Gladstone China's 'Royal Stafford' bone china became brand names of a new subsidiary 'Hostess Tableware Ltd

  • The Gladstone site was acquired be the Staffordshire Pottery Industry Preservation Trust and the Gladstone Pottery Museum opened in 1974.
