Parian, porcelain and earthenware manufacturers at the Victoria Works Shelton (Hanley), Stoke-on-Trent, England.

Note that the address of the Victoria Works is variously referred to as Shelton and Hanley. These are the same location - Hanley and Shelton are contiguous areas and in 1857 were incorporated as the Borough of Hanley.

Baguley as an independent manufacturer:

  • From c.1850-1855 George Baguley was operating on his own account. He operated at a small manufactory in Upper Hanley - it was here that he produced his parian statue of the Duke of Wellington.

  • On the 27th March 1854 and 15th April 1854 he registered two designs under the Ornamental Design Act 1842.

  • Around October 1854 he moved to a "new china manufactory near Shelton Church" (The Staffordshire Advertiser -21 Oct 1854). The Upper Hanley manufactory was advertised to be let in February 1855.

The various partnerships of
Lockett, Baguley & Cooper:

  • In 1855 Baguley was joined by George Lockett and Thomas Cooper. The business became Lockett, Baguley & Cooper.

  • This partnership registered three designs on the 26th February 1855, 26th May 1859 and 19th May 1860 under the Ornamental Design Act 1842.

  • In May 1861 George Baguley left the partnership which continued as Lockett & Cooper until January 1863.

  • Lockett & Cooper registered two designs on the 4th July 1861 and 20th December 1861 under the Ornamental Design Act 1842.

  • In January 1863 the Lockett & Cooper partnership was dissolved and the business carried on by Thomas Cooper.

  • The 1865 and 1867 Keates directories noted the firm as being in the hands of executors.

  • After George Baguley left the partnership of Lockett, Baguley & Cooper he continued on his own account at the Victoria Works.

  • In 1862 he was involved in patenting a technical innovation associated with the rapidly developing telegraph industry, alongside an established glass manufacturer from Sunderland. (patent 2734).

  • In July 1867 George Baguley was adjudged bankrupt. A notice in The London Gazette records that a petition for adjudication had been filed on 5 July 1867. On 4 November, Baguley applied for his discharge, which was granted the same day, subject to appeal.

  • Although the Potteries' Directory for 1868 still listed "Baguley, George, Broad Street, Hanley—China," this does not necessarily establish that he was still manufacturing in 1868. The directory may have been compiled before the bankruptcy or its information may simply not have been updated following the failure of the business.

Commemorative ware

Small Parian ware figures and busts of famous individuals and porcelain memorial ware was produced by a number of manufacturers and proved to be popular as commemorative ware.

Many of these items were manufactured specifically to commemorate major national events, royal jubilees, or the deaths of prominent figures. For example, during the Great Exhibition of 1851, Parian ware figures were widely sold as premium souvenirs for visitors to take home.

Cable pattern

lidded serving dish in the Cable pattern

Cable is a known pattern produced by Pinder, Bourne & Co (1862-82)  - examples found in Australia and New Zealand demonstrate its distribution in overseas markets.

Ware in the cable pattern with marks carrying the initials "L B & C" have been found - these have tentatively been attributed to Lockett, Baguley & Cooper - the only known Stoke-on-Trent pottery manufacturer with these initials.
