Hanover Street, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent

more on Hanover Street

Hanover Street used to run from Hope Street, at the bottom, to the old Port Vale football ground at the top. The top of Hanover Street ended just behind the High Street (now Town Road) where St. Johns church; the Congregational chapel and 'Church Works' pottery factory stood.

Hanover Street used to cross Bryan Street about half way up.

With the building of the Potteries Way ring road and the Potteries Shopping Centre this area has changed out of all recognition. Only the bottom third of Hanover Street exists. The parallel Union Street was the location of the ring road and Bryan Street was cut in two by the ring road to give Bryan Street and Lower Bryan Street.

On the left can be seen the end of a row of post-World War II 'prefabs' (prefabricated houses), the church tower is that of St. John's in Town Road and posts are the remains of the Port Vale football ground. This area is now occupied by the multi-story car park to the Potteries Shopping centre
