This pub was
named after Sir Robert Peel (1788-1850), British prime minister and
founder of the modern Conservative party.
Most of the streets were named after prominent Liberals - an exception was made in the case of Peel Street as in 1846 Prime Minister Robert Peel persuaded Parliament to institute the policy of free trade, resulting in a general abolition of export duties - the so called "Corn Laws". |
