Earthenware manufacturers at Lane End, (Longton) Stoke-on-Trent, England. 

  • The partnership of Weston & Hull consisted of George, John and William Weston together with James Hull (M&H 239) [1

  • James Hull left the partnership in November 1796. (Advertiser 26 Nov 1796).  [2

  • The Weston brothers' half-brother, Thomas Harley joined the business in 1799 (M&H p105) 

  • Thomas Harley left the partnership in December 1801 to set up on his own account. (M&H p105), (Advertiser 12 Dec 1801). George, William and John Weston continued on their own. (M&H p239)  

  • In November 1804 John Weston left the partnership to set up on his own account (Advertiser 15 Dec 1804) He was bankrupt in less than two years. (M&H p239), (Advertiser 7 Jun 1806)

  • George and William Weston continued as George Weston & Co.  The partnership was dissolved in 1815 (Advertiser 11 Feb 1815), leaving George Weston to continue the business, possibly with his son.

  • George Weston became bankrupt in 1829 and his houses, land and earthenware manufactory were announced for auction (Advertiser 12 Dec 1829)

 



Family history:

Samuel Weston married Elizabeth Smith in January 1764 they had three sons George (b.1767), John (b.1769) and William. 

Samuel died in 1773. In 1776 Elizabeth Weston (neé Smith) married Daniel Harley, they had one son Thomas (b.1778-d.1832). 

So Thomas Harley was the half brother of  the three Weston brothers and he joined them in their earthenware manufacturing business.

NOTICE is hereby given, that George Weston, of Lane-End, in the Parish of Stoke-upon-Trent, in the County of Stafford, Manufacturer of Earthenware, hath, by indentures of lease and release, bearing date the 1st and 2d days of December 1829, and made between the said George Weston of the one part, and John Hendley Sheridan, of Lane-End aforesaid, Gentleman, William Hammersley, of Shelton, in the said Parish of Stoke-upon-Trent, and County of Stafford, Gentleman, and Thomas Cope, of Lane-Delph, in the same Parish and County, Gentleman, of the other part; and by an indenture of assignment, bearing dale the same 2d day of December, and made between the said George Weston of the first part; the said John Hendley Sheridan, William Hammersley, and Thomas Cope, of the second part ; and the several Creditors of the said George Weston, who should execute the said last-mentioned indenture, of the third part ; conveyed and assigned all his real and personal estates and effects unto the said John Hendley Sheridan, William Hammersley, and Thomas Cope, in trust, for the benefit of all the Creditors of the said George Weston ; and that the said indentures were respectively executed by the said George Weston, John Hendley Sheridan, William Hammersley, and Thomas Cope, on the said 2d day of December, and the execution thereof by them is attested by John Dent, of Shelton aforesaid, Attorney at Law, and by William Dent, his Clerk.
