Location and period of operation:

Meakin Bros (& Co)
C & A Meakin

Burslem

c.1865

c.1873

Manufacturers of earthenware, particularly white ironstone, at the Trent Pottery, Peel Street, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, England

  • In trade directories of the 1865 to 1873 period the business is variously listed as both Meakin Bros and Meakin Bros & Co and C & A Meakin.

  • The business was set up by Charles Meakin (age 21) and his brother Alfred (age 17).

  • In a 1870 directory they are described as "earthenware manufacturers for foreign markets" (Harrod directory, courtesy - Henrywood, Staffordshire Potters.)

  • The partnership between Charles & Alfred was dissolved in 1873 -

    • From 1870 to 1882 Charles operated from the Trent Pottery, Burslem under his own name as Charles Meakin

    • Alfred Meakin started business in Tunstall in 1874 - which was the year after "Meakin Brothers" were last  recorded at Trent Pottery, Burslem.

James Meakin had four sons - James, George, Charles and Alfred - who all became successful pottery manufacturers.

 - see more on the Meakin Brothers

NOTE: There were a number of people with the name Meakin who were pottery manufacturers - Meakin Bros & Co should not be confused with Meakin & Co at the Elder Road Works, Cobridge - the relationship between these two businesses (if any) is uncertain.
